Years ago, I realized how easy it was to get what I wanted if I said the right thing. I couldn't just wing it, though; I had to play out the conversation in my head before it actually took place. I thought of the possible resistance from the other person and how I could deflect it. I also thought about the why; why would my negotiation partner bend to my desires? What's in it for them? And I was never pushy or aggressive because I learned that it made the other person defensive or unwilling to negotiate. I also learned that trust is a crucial factor in negotiating.
You cannot successfully negotiate if you cannot rely on the other person to trust you. Of course, the same goes for you; you have to be trustworthy.
