Sometimes, no matter how much effort you put into planning and preparing for an interview, such as coming up with the "what if' scenarios, assessing the best rapport technique, and figuring out how to create a comfortable environment, there will be some people who will not open up to you.  

They may willingly answer questions about one topic but shy away from another. They may just be tight-lipped because they inherently do not trust others. They could be introverted and shy and, therefore, hesitant to share information. They may be cooperative and truthful but still not forthcoming with the level of detailed information you need.  

Thankfully, there is an elite intelligence tradecraft technique called elicitation that can be the solution.

Some people dread having to negotiate, especially when purchasing a new vehicle or selling a home, and then there are others who love it. I love it.

When I was young, I realized how easy it was to get what I wanted if I said the right thing. I couldn't just wing it, though; I had to play out the conversation in my head before it actually took place. I thought of the possible resistance from the other person and how I could deflect it. I also thought about the why; why would my negotiation partner bend to my desires? What's in it for them? And I was never pushy or aggressive because I learned that it made the other person defensive or unwilling to negotiate. I also learned that trust is a crucial factor in negotiating. 

You cannot successfully negotiate if you cannot rely on the other person to trust you.  Of course, the same goes for you; you have to be trustworthy.  

During a negotiation, you must know your opponent’s stance, what they want, and what drives their behavior.  You must also be aware of what is driving your behavior; be honest with yourself.
